Welcome to the Kingsmead Academy Child Development Department
Child Development is a course which develops skills and knowledge for a career which involves working with children, e.g. nursery nursing / education, primary school teaching, children’s nursing, social work or many others. Or if you are interested in finding out more about the way children develop and the different factors that influence their development.
High expectations on learning. You will be required to learn in various ways. Where possible lessons will include practical learning including making bottles, nursery trips, designing and practicing children’s activities suitable for observing developmental norms. The course is assessed through completion of coursework and an exam. During our coursework lessons you will work on computers writing up and researching knowledge.
A Summary of the Course:
The course is made up of three modules:
- RO57 External exam – Health and well-being for child development – 40% of final grade. Students learn about the roles and responsibilities of parenthood, from pre-conception through antenatal to postnatal care and the importance of creating the best conditions for a child to thrive.
- RO58 Coursework based unit – Create a safe environment and understand nutritional needs of children from birth to five years (30%) Student’s research child safety, nutritional and hygiene requirements of children from birth to five years, and then demonstrate in a practical activity how these needs are met to promote a child’s development and well-being.
- RO59 Coursework based unit – Understand the development of a child from one to five years. In the third component of study, students will learn the expected developmental norms for children from one to five years. They will observe and research techniques and skills to investigate these developmental norms and explore their findings. They will learn about the importance of creating plans and providing different play activities to support children in their development.
