At Kingsmead we use the term ‘Personal Development’ to cover all things PSHE based. The purpose of Personal Development is to support the development of compassion and integrity within students, furnishing them with the essential skills needed and comprehensive knowledge for the world around them.
We teach lessons fortnightly in tutor groups with a curriculum which covers a wide range of topics aimed to broaden and deepen perspectives, discuss scenarios and debate ideas relevant to the students age and experiences. During the year the students will also take part in 4 drop down days focussing on safety and careers, where they can experience activities from outside agencies in addition to those provided by school.
The topics covered are Finance, Careers, Mental Health, Physical Health, Culture and Sex and Relationships. The topics are delivered by teachers most knowledgeable in those areas, bringing their own personal qualities and attributes to the course. The work is designed to be thought provoking and challenge students thinking while being flexible enough to be adapted to cover current issues and events from within the local community.
The curriculum aims to support students mental and physical health, develop non-cognitive skills and support safeguarding. The topics are designed to progressively build through students’ time at Kingsmead, ensuring that by the time they complete year 11, they have a comprehensive understanding of the world we live in and how to best be successful in it.
